Birbal and the Wax Statue

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

On a sun-kissed afternoon in the magnificent palace of Emperor Akbar, laughter danced in the air like butterflies. The Emperor, with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, turned to his clever friend Birbal and asked, “Birbal, if Lord Krishna has so many helpers, why does he come running whenever a devotee calls? Is he a bit… disorganized?”

The courtiers giggled, eager to see how Birbal would respond. Sensing the playful challenge, Birbal hatched a clever plan. The very next day, he tiptoed to the Prince's jolly guardian and whispered a secret idea: “Let’s make a life-sized wax statue of young Prince Khurram, dress it in his finest clothes, and place it by the royal garden lake!”

Excited, the guardian set to work, and soon the statue was ready, looking just like the charming prince! On the much-anticipated afternoon, Birbal and Emperor Akbar strolled through the vibrant gardens, where flowers bloomed like rainbows and birds sang sweet melodies.

As they neared the shimmering lake, the guardian appeared, striding confidently. Suddenly, he slipped on a muddy patch, and with a loud SPLASH, the wax statue tumbled into the deep water! Akbar’s heart raced as he saw the statue sinking. Without a second thought, he jumped into the lake, splashing like a dolphin!

Water flew in every direction, sparkling like tiny diamonds. The Emperor dove deep, reaching for the statue, desperate to save it. When he resurfaced, dripping wet, he held up the statue, only to realize it was just a wax figure! Birbal, trying hard not to giggle, said, “Your Majesty, you have guards for everything, yet when you thought your grandson was in danger, you jumped right in!”

Akbar looked at his soaked robes and muddy feet, and in that moment, he understood. He laughed, shaking the water from his hair, as the sun shone brilliantly above, reminding everyone that love knows no bounds.
