Why Do Palms Have No Hair?

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

On a sunlit afternoon in the grand palace of Emperor Akbar, the golden rays danced through the windows, warming everything they touched. In his magnificent throne, Akbar sat with a twinkle in his eye, while his clever advisor, Birbal, played with a shimmering feather. Suddenly, the emperor stretched his arms wide and announced, “Birbal! Look at my marvelous hands! They have hair everywhere, except my palms! Why is that?”

Birbal's eyes sparked with mischief as he leaned closer. “Ah, Your Majesty! Your palms are smooth because they are busy doing good! Each day, they open wide to share your treasures with the needy and to feed the hungry!”

Akbar's face lit up with joy, and he puffed out his chest like a proud peacock. “What a lovely answer, Birbal! But wait, your palms are also hairless! Why is that?”

Birbal's grin widened. “That’s because my palms are always ready to accept your generous gifts! I’ve accepted so many that they’ve worn away every last hair!”

The courtiers squirmed in their seats, their cheeks turning as red as ripe tomatoes. Akbar burst into laughter, a sound that echoed like music through the grand hall. But then, a glint of mischief sparkled in his eyes once more. “And what about THEIR palms?” he asked, gesturing to the courtiers.

Birbal looked at the gathered crowd, sympathy blooming in his heart. “Your Majesty, whenever you reward me, they rub their hands together in envy and frustration! That constant rubbing has made their palms as smooth as polished stones!”

The courtiers shifted uncomfortably, some hiding their hands, while others could not help but giggle despite their embarrassment. Akbar’s laughter filled the air, shaking the palace with delight.

In that moment, the courtiers couldn’t help but feel lighter, realizing the truth in Birbal’s words. As the laughter echoed around them, everyone understood that clever answers can spark even more questions, leading to deeper thoughts and, perhaps, even more laughter.
