The Wise Fool

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

On a sunny afternoon in the grand palace of Emperor Akbar, whispers of excitement filled the air. Courtiers gathered around the golden throne, giggling and glancing at the Emperor, who sighed deeply, his robe gleaming like sunshine. After a long day filled with squabbles, he felt like his head was stuffed with too many opinions.

“Birbal!” he called out, his voice echoing in the cool marble hall. “What’s the difference between a wise man and a fool?” Everyone leaned in, eager to hear Birbal’s clever answer.

With a twinkle in his eye, Birbal stepped forward. “Imagine a powerful storm at sea!” he exclaimed. The courtiers gasped, picturing crashing waves and fierce winds. “A wise man is like a brave captain; when the ship rocks and rolls, he stays calm and knows just what to do to steer through!”

“Now, think of a fool,” Birbal continued, raising his brows dramatically. “He sees the storm and thinks, ‘Let’s throw oil into the water!’ WHOOSH!” He flailed his arms, mimicking flames, making the courtiers giggle. “Instead of calming the waves, he just makes everything worse!”

But just then, a loud CRASH echoed through the hall! A large vase had tipped over, scattering sparkling pieces everywhere. The courtiers gasped, their eyes wide with shock. Raju, a young courtier, rushed forward, flailing his arms. “Quick! Let’s throw water!” he shouted, panic in his voice.

“Wait, Raju!” Birbal interjected, raising a hand. “How about we clean up carefully instead?” The Emperor nodded, and soon, everyone was working together with brooms, gently sweeping up the glittering shards. Laughter filled the palace as the tension faded into cheerful chatter.

When they finished, Emperor Akbar turned to Birbal, his eyes sparkling with admiration. “You’ve taught me something today that no book ever could!”

Birbal smiled as warm as the sun, knowing that amidst the chaos, calmness and wise choices had saved the day.
