The Water-Seller

Jataka Tales

An ancient Jataka tale of compassion and wisdom — a story that has been told for over two thousand years.

In a faraway land, where the golden sands stretched endlessly, a vibrant trading caravan set off on an exciting journey. Led by the wise and cheerful Raj, the caravan was alive with laughter, sturdy oxen, and carts brimming with treasures. As the sun dipped and the stars twinkled like diamonds, they began their adventure, guided by Mira, a talented stargazer who could read the night sky like a storybook.

One evening, after a delicious meal, Mira snuggled into her cart for a little nap. As she dreamed, the sleepy oxen wandered in a big, sleepy circle. When the sun peeked over the dunes, the caravan found themselves back at the very same spot! Panic fluttered in their hearts. “Oh no! We’re lost in this desert!” cried the people, their voices filled with worry.

But Raj, with a determined gleam in his eye, spotted a little patch of green grass poking through the sand. “That means water is close!” he shouted, rallying everyone. “DIG HERE!” With renewed hope, they began to dig, sending clouds of sand flying. Suddenly—CLUNK! They hit rock, and despair washed over them. But Raj didn’t give up. He climbed into the pit and listened closely. To his surprise, he heard a magical sound, like a distant waterfall!

“There's water beneath this stone!” he exclaimed. Raj called on Arjun, the strongest boy. “Strike the rock!” With a mighty swing of his hammer—CRACK! A tiny crack appeared. Undeterred, Arjun swung again—CRAAACK! The rock shattered, and with a magnificent WHOOSH, clear, cold water burst forth, dancing in the sunlight!

Cheers filled the air as laughter echoed through the desert. They rushed to fill their vessels, and the animals joyfully drank. Raj planted a bright banner above the spring, a shining beacon for future travelers. With hearts full of joy, the caravan continued their journey, knowing that even in the darkest times, hope and courage could lead to the most wonderful surprises.
