The Three Hundred Gold Coins

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In a magical kingdom filled with twinkling palaces and lively markets, there lived a clever man named Birbal. He was the wise advisor to the kind Emperor Akbar. But one day, trouble slithered in like a sneaky cat. Akbar’s jealous brother-in-law wanted Birbal’s job, so he whispered lies until Akbar grew tired of the fuss. With a heavy heart, Birbal left, and the brother-in-law took his place, a smug grin plastered on his face.

But Emperor Akbar had a sparkling idea. He placed three shiny gold coins on the table that jingled like cheerful bells. “Dear brother-in-law,” Akbar said with a playful glint in his eye, “I have a little challenge for you! Spend these coins wisely so that one hundred coins return to me HERE, one hundred in the NEXT world, and one hundred that are NEITHER here nor there!” The brother-in-law scratched his head, puzzled. “What on earth does that mean?”

Tossing and turning in bed, he finally decided to seek Birbal’s help. “Please, I need your wisdom!” he begged, looking worried. Birbal chuckled, his eyes twinkling like stars. “Don’t worry! Let’s turn this challenge into an adventure!”

First, they visited a grand merchant preparing for his son’s wedding. Birbal gifted one hundred coins, declaring, “A gift from the Emperor!” The merchant was overjoyed and sent back double that amount! “One hundred HERE, in this lifetime!” Birbal winked.

Next, they wandered to the poorest part of town, where the hungry shivered in the cold. Birbal bought food and warm blankets with the next hundred coins, bringing smiles and grateful tears. “This kindness will surely be rewarded in the NEXT world,” he thought, feeling a warm glow in his heart.

Lastly, Birbal organized a dazzling night filled with music and dancing. The city square sparkled with laughter and joy as the children twirled like butterflies. The happiness he created was pure magic—neither here nor there, just delight in the moment.

The next day, Birbal returned to the court, where everyone buzzed with excitement. As he revealed how he solved the Emperor’s challenge, the courtiers gasped in amazement. The brother-in-law, once so smug, turned red as a cherry! Akbar smiled, asking, “Could you have done that?” The brother-in-law mumbled, head down, “No, Your Majesty. Only Birbal could think of such clever and kind solutions.”

With that, Birbal returned to his rightful place, his heart filled with joy, while the kingdom celebrated the return of their wise friend.
