The The The The Three Donkey Loads

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

On a bright, sunny day, the great Emperor Akbar decided it was the perfect day for a splash in the shimmering river with his two cheerful sons. The water sparkled like a thousand diamonds under the sun, calling them to jump in. With joyful shouts, they raced toward the riverbank, while their clever friend Birbal settled down on the soft grass, ready to guard the royal clothes and treasures.

“Cannonball!” yelled one of the princes, launching himself into the water with a huge splash! Akbar and his sons dove in together, their laughter ringing out like music. The cool water felt refreshing, wrapping around them like a friendly hug. They splashed and played until their laughter echoed across the river like a joyful symphony.

Finally, the Emperor and his sons climbed out, water dripping from their hair like shiny jewels. But when Akbar turned to find Birbal, he burst into laughter! There sat Birbal, buried under a mountain of colorful clothes—tunics, scarves, and sparkling turbans piled high! One grand turban had slipped over his nose, making him look quite silly.

“Ha! Birbal, you look just like a washerman’s donkey!” Akbar chuckled. The princes giggled, and even the guards couldn’t help but chuckle. But Birbal, with a calm smile, peeked out from under the turban. “Indeed, Your Majesty! But there’s just one little difference between me and that donkey.”

Curiosity filled the air as Akbar raised an eyebrow. “What difference?”

Birbal adjusted a scarf dramatically and declared, “A washerman’s donkey carries only ONE load. I, however, am carrying THREE!”

Silence fell like a heavy blanket. Akbar’s eyes widened in surprise, and then he erupted into laughter so loud it startled a flock of birds into the sky! “Birbal!” he gasped, clutching his belly with joy. “You truly are a wonderful man! How do you always turn things around like this?”

With a smile, Birbal straightened his turban. “I simply share the truth, Your Majesty. One load at a time.”

In that magical moment, everyone learned how a quick-witted joke could lighten even the heaviest of hearts.
