The Clever Boy at the Crossroads

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In a lively village where laughter danced in the air and the aroma of spices filled every corner, there lived a clever boy named Mahesh Das. With his bright, twinkling eyes and a heart brimming with dreams, he was always ready for an adventure. One golden evening, as the sun painted the sky in shades of orange and purple, the mighty Emperor Akbar rode through the forest on a grand hunting expedition. But oh dear! In his hurry, he got lost!

The Emperor looked around, his stomach rumbling like a hungry bear. He stumbled upon a magical crossroads where three wondrous paths appeared, each glimmering like a treasure. "Which way to Agra?" he boomed, his voice echoing through the trees. Suddenly, a cheerful boy strutted down the middle path, his bare feet dancing lightly against the earth. With a bright smile, he looked up at the grand Emperor.

“Huzoor!” the boy called out playfully. “Roads don’t walk by themselves! Only people travel on them!”

Startled by the boy's boldness, Akbar raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean, young one?” he asked, curiosity sparkling in his eyes.

With a grin that could light up the night, Mahesh replied, “You must choose your own adventure, Huzoor! Which road will YOU take to Agra?” The Emperor’s laughter boomed through the forest, echoing like joyous thunder.

“What is your name, clever lad?” he chuckled, his eyes twinkling like stars.

“Mahesh Das,” the boy beamed, proud as a peacock.

In a grand gesture, Akbar took off his golden ring, which shimmered like a sunbeam, and placed it gently in Mahesh’s palm. “When you visit my court, show this, and I shall remember your cleverness!”

“Thank you, Huzoor!” Mahesh exclaimed, bowing deeply, excitement bubbling in his chest. With a mischievous glint in his eye, he pointed down the middle path. “That road will lead you to Agra!”

As the Emperor galloped away, the sun dipped low, casting a magical glow over the land. Years later, that bright boy grew up to be Birbal, the wisest minister in Akbar’s court, known for his bravery and cleverness. He changed the kingdom with his quick wit, showing everyone that the smallest voice can make the biggest difference. And it all began at a mystical crossroads, where a simple question became the start of a grand adventure.
