The Wrestler and the Wise Man

Tenali Raman Tales

A hilarious Tenali Raman tale where wit, humour, and a sharp mind save the day!

In the bustling kingdom of Vijayanagara, excitement buzzed like tiny fireflies in the night. Whispers fluttered through the palace like mischievous butterflies: a gigantic wrestling champion was coming! Everyone said he was so big he could lift a whole elephant! As the sun dipped low, a grand parade arrived. Strong men carried a mighty king on a firm chair, and when they set him down, the ground trembled like a drum! With shoulders like mountains and arms like thick branches, the giant wrestler bellowed, “I will defeat everyone here!”

The brave wrestlers of Vijayanagara turned pale, suddenly finding reasons to flee. “Oh no, I need to help my cat!” one yelled. “I think I left the stove on!” another exclaimed. One by one, they dashed away, leaving the king feeling lonely and worried. “Is there NO ONE to defend our kingdom?” he cried out.

Just then, a quirky figure walked in, balancing a large clay pot on his head. “WHO ARE YOU?” the king asked, scratching his head. A cheerful voice replied from inside the pot, “It’s me, Raman! You told me to keep my face hidden, and I’ve done just that!” The crowd giggled, and even the king chuckled. “Can you face this giant?” he asked, eyes sparkling with mischief.

With a calm smile, Raman replied, “I won’t wrestle him! Instead, I challenge him to do what I can do with my eyes closed!” The wrestler laughed, thinking it would be easy. “I accept!” he roared confidently.

Raman sat down, eyes gently closed. His assistant quickly grabbed a bucket of sparkling sand and WHOOOSH! The sand swirled through the air and landed all over Raman’s face. He wiped it off and grinned. “Your turn!” he said playfully.

The giant wrestler stared at the bucket, his big eyes wide with fear. Could he keep his eyes open while the sand flew? He felt dizzy just thinking about it! “I… I give up,” he whispered, his bravado melting away like snow in the sun.

Cheers erupted like fireworks! The king celebrated as he awarded Raman a shining prize. The wrestlers hoisted Raman high on their shoulders, the clay pot still steady on his head. They paraded him through the streets, joyous cheers ringing through the air for the clever champion who had outsmarted the strongest man in the land.
