Once, in a cheerful village beside a sparkling river, there lived a humble woodcutter named Oliver. Every day before dawn, he would grab his old, trusty iron axe, which was worn and chipped from years of hard work. It was his only tool and the lifeline for his family.
One sunny afternoon, while chopping wood near the riverbank, Oliver leaned over to watch the shiny fish swimming by. Suddenly, his foot slipped on the slippery moss! With a gasp, he saw his precious axe fly from his hands and — SPLASH! — it vanished into the dark waters. Panic filled his heart. Without his axe, he couldn’t chop wood, and without wood, he couldn’t feed his children. Tears streamed down his cheeks as he buried his face in his hands, feeling completely lost.
But above the rushing waters, the River God had been watching. The river began to swirl, and from its depths emerged a magnificent figure, shimmering in shades of blue and green, sparkling like a thousand diamonds. He held a dazzling golden axe that glimmered like the sun. "Is this what you lost?" boomed the River God, his voice echoing like thunder.
Oliver's eyes widened at the golden axe. He could be rich! But as he compared it to his own, he remembered how simple his axe was. With a deep breath, he said, "No, that's not mine. Mine was iron." The River God looked surprised but nodded and dove back into the river.
Moments later, the River God surfaced with a silver axe, shining like a star. "Is this yours?" he asked. Again, Oliver shook his head. "No, mine was just plain iron." The River God smiled and disappeared into the water once more. Finally, he returned, holding up Oliver's battered iron axe. "YES! That's mine!" Oliver shouted, his heart leaping with joy.
The River God grinned and placed all three axes — the golden, the silver, and the iron — into Oliver's arms. "Because you were honest, you shall have all three!" he said with a twinkle in his eye. Bursting with excitement, Oliver rushed home to tell his family the incredible news.
Word of Oliver's adventure quickly spread throughout the village. That evening, his greedy neighbor, Greg, wanted riches too. He threw his perfectly good axe into the river, shouting, “Bring me the golden axe!” When the River God appeared with the golden axe, Greg exclaimed, "YES! That's mine!" But the River God’s smile faded, and without a word, he sank back into the river, leaving Greg standing empty-handed, not even with his own axe.
And so, Oliver returned home with not only riches but also a heart full of warmth, while Greg learned that greed and dishonesty could lead to losing everything.
