Old Anand was a wise woodcutter who had spent many years in the magical Whispering Woods. His hands were rough like tree bark, and his heart was as honest as the clear blue sky. One sunny morning, as golden rays danced through the leaves, Anand was hard at work, chopping wood near a sparkling river. With each swing of his trusty axe, the sound echoed through the trees like a cheerful song.
But suddenly, just as he lifted his axe high, it slipped from his grasp, twirling through the air like a playful butterfly. Then, with a great SPLASH, it sank into the deep, dark water! Anand fell to his knees, his heart sinking like a rock. “Oh no! What will I do now?” he cried, imagining his family going hungry without wood to sell.
As he sat there, feeling lost, something magical began to happen. The river shimmered and bubbled, and then—WHOOSH!—a glowing figure emerged! It was the River God, bright as the moon on a clear night. In his hands, he held a dazzling golden axe that sparkled like stars. “Is this your axe, woodcutter?” he asked with a voice like gentle thunder.
Anand’s eyes widened. The golden axe was worth a fortune! But instead of lying, he shook his head. “No, mine is plain iron.” The River God smiled and vanished into the water, only to return with a shiny silver axe. “What about this one?” Anand again replied, “No, that’s not mine.”
Finally, the River God emerged with a worn, chipped iron axe. Anand’s heart leaped with joy. “That’s mine!” he exclaimed. The River God beamed. “Because you told the truth, you shall have all three axes!” With a wave of his hand, the golden and silver axes appeared, glittering in the sunlight.
But the greedy neighbor, who had overheard the tale, rushed to the river the next day. He threw his own axe into the water, eager for riches. “I want the golden axe!” he shouted. When the River God appeared with the golden axe, the greedy man yelled, “YES! That’s mine!” But the River God frowned, took back the golden axe, and vanished, leaving the greedy man empty-handed and confused.
As the river grew calm, Anand returned home with joy in his heart and three beautiful axes. He knew that honesty was the greatest treasure of all, and he shared his blessings with his family, grateful for the magic of truth.
