In the lively town of Benares, excitement buzzed like a swarm of butterflies. A wealthy merchant was throwing the most splendid party for his daughter’s wedding! The cook, a little elf-like whirlwind, danced around the kitchen for three whole days, stirring, chopping, and seasoning the tastiest dishes. By the time the sun rose on the big day, the long tables sparkled with delights: golden roasted ducks, colorful fruit tarts, and soft, warm bread rolls that smelled like magic.
Watching over this feast was an old dog with a heart full of love, despite his graying muzzle. For ten loyal years, he protected the merchant’s family. He never stole a crumb, even when the delicious smells tickled his nose. The old dog lay patiently by the gate, his wise eyes ready to keep everyone safe.
But lurking nearby was a sly fox, his fur bright as autumn leaves and his nose twitching with excitement. When he caught the sweet scent of the feast, his eyes gleamed with mischief. “What a treasure awaits!” he thought, and with a quick wiggle, he snuck in and snatched a whole roasted duck!
When the cook returned and shouted in shock, “THE DUCK! IT'S GONE!” the old dog, resting quietly, was suddenly accused. “Did you take it?” the merchant asked, frowning. The old dog looked up calmly and said, “I’ve served here for ten years. Have I ever stolen?”
The merchant hesitated, noticing there was no trace of duck grease on the old dog’s face. “Then where is the duck?” he asked. Following the old dog's advice, the merchant’s son discovered tiny paw prints leading away—fox prints! “He’s close!” cried the boy. They set a clever trap with a shiny piece of bread, and when the greedy fox returned, SNAP! He was caught!
The merchant hurried back to the old dog, his heart heavy with regret. “I’m sorry I doubted you. I should have trusted your loyal heart.” The old dog wagged his tail and settled back down, content in knowing that true goodness shines through even the toughest times.
