The Weight of Injustice

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

On a rainy afternoon, dark clouds rumbled like a giant's belly, and raindrops danced across rooftops like little fairies. In the heart of the bustling village, a worried woman named Kamala hurried through the streets. Her face looked like an old map filled with worries, and her heart felt heavy. “Oh, Birbal Saheb!” she called out, spotting the clever man known for his wisdom. “The Emperor is building a grand palace on my family’s land! We’ve lived there for generations! Please help me!”

With a warm smile, Birbal took her hand and said, “Do not fret! I will handle this.” Kamala nodded and returned home, though her heart still felt like it was carrying a sack of rocks.

Days turned into a flurry of noise at the construction site. CLANG! BANG! CRASH! Workers hammered and dug, creating clouds of dust that swirled like mischievous spirits. One sunny morning, Emperor Akbar rode in on his magnificent horse, his royal cape flowing like a river behind him. But to his surprise, there was Birbal, down on his knees, filling a huge sack with mud! “Birbal!” the Emperor exclaimed, his eyes wide with confusion. “What are you doing?”

With a twinkle in his eye, Birbal grinned, “I’m collecting good deeds for the next life, Your Majesty!” Akbar chuckled and rolled up his sleeves to join in, their laughter echoing through the air.

Then, Birbal asked, “Can you help me lift this sack?” Akbar grabbed a nearby sack and pulled with all his strength. “UNGH! It’s so heavy!” he gasped, struggling to lift it. Birbal nodded, his expression serious. “If this small sack feels so heavy in your hands, imagine the weight of the entire land on your royal shoulders! Each grain belongs to a family that has cherished it for years.”

Akbar paused, his heart softening as he looked at the muddy sack, then at the bustling site. Taking a deep breath, he declared, “Stop all work! This palace shall be built somewhere else!”

The news spread like magic, and when Kamala heard it, her heart soared. She danced joyfully all the way home, gratitude sparkling in her eyes. Birbal dusted off his hands, a satisfied smile on his face, knowing that a kind heart can lift the heaviest burden.
