Birbal's Cleverness

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In a grand palace in India, where peacocks strutted in their colorful feathers and flowers filled the air with sweet fragrances, there lived a clever man named Birbal. The wise Emperor Akbar adored Birbal's stories, but not everyone in the court shared his fondness. One person, named Abdul Karim, with one squinty eye and a heart full of envy, watched Birbal like a hawk, hoping to catch him in a mistake.

One sunny afternoon, as the golden sun sparkled on the palace walls, Birbal strolled by, casually chewing his favorite tobacco. With a mischievous grin, he spat at the wall! Abdul Karim's squinty eye widened with glee. “This is my chance!” he thought, racing to the emperor like a bolt of lightning. “Your Majesty!” he exclaimed, pointing at the wall. “Birbal has SPAT on your royal wall! What a shame!”

Curious, Emperor Akbar called Birbal to him. “Birbal,” he said, trying hard to stay serious, “you must only spit in a useless place. Is that clear?” Birbal bowed respectfully. “Perfectly clear, Your Majesty,” he replied, a playful twinkle shining in his eyes.

The next day, Birbal returned to the court, still chewing. Abdul Karim, perched like a hawk on the edge of his seat, eagerly waited for another chance to catch him. Birbal walked right up to him, his steps heavy with suspense. Suddenly, with a sly smile, Birbal spat right into Abdul Karim’s blind eye! Gasps echoed through the court, and Abdul Karim jumped back, startled. “YOUR MAJESTY!” he cried, flailing his arms in disbelief. “Did you SEE what he did?”

Emperor Akbar turned, eyebrows raised, and asked, “Explain yourself, Birbal.” With calm confidence, Birbal replied, “Your Majesty, you told me to spit only in a useless spot. Abdul Karim’s blind eye sees nothing and does nothing! Isn’t it the most vacant spot in the court?”

The emperor's serious facade cracked, and a hearty laugh burst forth, filling the court with joy. Abdul Karim, his face turning crimson, realized he had been outsmarted and quietly slipped away, learning to be more careful in his next attempts to trap the clever Birbal.
