The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Once upon a time, in a sunny meadow bursting with colorful wildflowers, there lived a cheerful little Country Mouse named Munch. Munch loved his simple life, where he could nibble on crunchy seeds and savor the sweet taste of roots. Each day, he would sit beneath a big, leafy oak tree, feeling the warm breeze and listening to the joyful chirps of birds. Life was peaceful, and he was happy.

One day, a shimmering letter arrived, fluttering like a butterfly in the breeze. It was from his cousin, Max the City Mouse! The letter sparkled with excitement as it invited Munch to visit the dazzling city, where Max claimed he feasted like a king every night. Munch's heart raced as he imagined the wonders of the city. He quickly packed his favorite seeds and set off on an adventure.

When Munch reached the city, his eyes widened in awe. Bright lights twinkled like stars, and towering buildings seemed to touch the sky! Max greeted him with a big smile and whisked him away to a magnificent house filled with treasures. The dining table was a feast of colorful cakes, golden cheese, and crispy biscuits that made Munch's tummy rumble with delight.

But just as he took a nibble of cheese, a loud BANG shattered the joyful moment! Both mice scurried under the enormous cupboard, their hearts racing like tiny drums. “What was that?” Munch whispered, shaking with fear. “It’s just the door!” Max replied, peeking out. But soon they heard the thundering PATTER of a dog’s paws! They dashed back under the cupboard, trembling together.

After the dog left, Munch bravely peeked out again, only to see a long, dark shadow creeping across the floor. It was the cat! Munch's heart sank, and he knew he couldn’t enjoy this feast while danger lurked around every corner. With determination, he turned to Max and said, “This food is delicious, but I would rather be safe at home, munching on my simple seeds.”

Max's smile faded as he realized how much Munch valued peace over luxury. Munch journeyed back to his meadow, feeling the soft grass under his paws. When he finally settled back beneath the grand oak tree with his simple supper, the stars twinkled above him, and the gentle sounds of the night wrapped around him like a warm hug. Munch closed his eyes, knowing he was the happiest mouse of all.
