The Two Loyal Servants

Vikram & Betaal Tales

A spine-tingling Vikram and Betaal riddle — where a brave king must answer or lose everything!

In the shimmering kingdom of Varanasi, the night sky was as dark as a raven's feather, and the moon hid away, leaving only a twinkle of orange from distant campfires. King Dharmaveer, with a heart full of longing, paced the royal palace. “I need a strong and wise bride!” he declared, his voice echoing like a thunderclap. To find his perfect match, the king announced a grand challenge: any brave man wishing to marry his daughter must first get his approval!

Excitement buzzed through the land, and soon, a wealthy merchant named Vidyanand stepped forward. “My daughter, Parvathi, is the cleverest and most beautiful girl in all the kingdom!” With eager anticipation, the king sent his two most trusted servants, Ravi and Shyam, to meet her. When they returned, their faces were pale as ghosts. “Your Majesty,” they quivered, “she is truly magnificent, but her fierce will could shake your kingdom!”

The king’s heart, however, was clouded by his desires, and he quickly decided to marry Parvathi off to one of his ministers. Days passed, and one sunny afternoon, the king rode by the minister’s palace. There she was! Parvathi stood on the balcony, her hair swirling in the breeze like golden ribbons. “She’s even more stunning than I imagined!” he gasped, a storm of jealousy brewing within him.

“Those servants tricked me!” he roared, filled with rage. “They deserve to be punished!” Just then, a ghostly voice whispered through the shadows, “Vikram, what say you?” It was the spirit of Betaal, always ready to teach a lesson. Vikram’s eyes sparkled with courage. “The king is wrong! Ravi and Shyam only spoke the truth, caring for the kingdom more than anyone else!”

As Vikram spoke, magic crackled in the air, and the palace trembled. The truth swirled around like a whirlwind, and the spirit vanished into the night, leaving behind a king who realized that pride can blind him to the wisdom of his loyal friends.

In the days that followed, King Dharmaveer learned to listen to those who truly cared for him, discovering that honesty is the greatest treasure of all.
