The Turtle and the Geese

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

Once upon a time, in a sparkling lake surrounded by tall, swaying trees and colorful flowers, there lived a turtle named Kambugriva. He had two wonderful friends, elegant swans named Suri and Nila. Each evening, as the sun dipped behind the hills, the three friends gathered on the soft, sandy bank to share stories, sing songs, and laugh together. Life felt like a magical adventure!

But one year, the rain forgot to fall. The sun shone brighter and hotter than ever, and the lake began to shrink. Each day, the water level dropped, revealing cracked mud and thirsty plants. The fish swam away, and the lovely lotus flowers wilted. Kambugriva felt sad as he watched his beautiful home change.

One evening, Suri and Nila exchanged worried glances. “We must leave,” Suri said softly. “We need to fly to a bigger lake with plenty of water. But what about you, dear Kambugriva? You can’t fly with us.” Tears rolled down Kambugriva's cheeks. “I wish I could go, but I’m just a turtle!”

Then, a bright idea sparked in his mind. “Wait! I have a plan! You can hold onto a strong stick with your beaks, and I will bite the middle! You can carry me through the sky!” The swans’ eyes shone with excitement. “That’s a clever idea! But promise us, no matter what happens, DO NOT open your mouth!”

“I promise!” Kambugriva said eagerly. They found a sturdy stick, and with a flap of their wings, the swans soared into the sky with Kambugriva hanging on tightly. Higher and higher they flew, gliding over treetops, sparkling rivers, and golden fields. Kambugriva felt like a star!

As they flew over a bustling village, children looked up in amazement. “Look! Two swans carrying a TURTLE!” they shouted with wide eyes. Kambugriva’s heart swelled with pride, but then a little boy giggled and yelled, “HA! What a funny-looking turtle!”

Forgetful in his excitement, Kambugriva opened his mouth to defend himself. Suddenly, the stick slipped from Suri and Nila's beaks! Down, down, down he tumbled, like a feather in a wild wind. WHOOOOSH! THUD! He landed softly in the mud, unharmed but shocked. Above him, Suri and Nila cried out in worry.

Kambugriva realized that sometimes it’s better to stay quiet, especially when excitement takes over. As the sun set, painting the sky with brilliant colors, he promised himself to think before speaking, knowing that words can change everything in an instant.
