The Tortoise That Sang

African Folktales

A beloved African folktale retold for young readers — rich with wisdom, wonder, and timeless lessons.

In the heart of a vibrant green land by the sparkling River Volta, there lived a little tortoise named Tiko. Tiko wasn’t an ordinary tortoise; he had a magical voice! When the sun dipped low, painting the sky in dreamy swirls of orange and purple, Tiko would sing sweet melodies that made the flowers sway and the fish leap with joy. His voice was like honey flowing over smooth river stones, soothing even the wildest hearts.

One sunny afternoon, a curious boy named Kofi strolled along the river, filling his water jug. Suddenly, he heard a sound so enchanting it made his heart race—was that a tortoise singing? Tiko’s beautiful voice wrapped around him like a cozy blanket. Kofi couldn’t believe his ears! Excitedly, he scooped up Tiko and raced back to the village, shouting, “Everyone, come quick! I found a singing tortoise!”

The village buzzed with energy as Kofi burst through the gates. The Chief paused his important talk, the elders set down their tea, and even the grumpy guard at the gate perked up. Everyone gathered around, their eyes sparkling with anticipation. “Sing for us, Tiko!” Kofi exclaimed, holding the tortoise high.

But Tiko blinked slowly and remained silent. The crowd began to giggle, and Kofi’s heart sank. The Chief shook his head like a rumbling thundercloud. “You’ve wasted our time! You will help with chores for a week!”

With tears in his eyes, Kofi returned to the riverbank, gently placing Tiko in the tall grass. “I’m sorry,” he murmured, feeling small and sad. Just as he turned to leave, Tiko opened his mouth wide and let out a magical TRILL that echoed through the air—a tune so rich and beautiful! Kofi spun around, eyes wide with wonder, as Tiko smiled and sang one last line that danced on the wind. With a gentle splash, Tiko slipped into the river, disappearing beneath the shimmering surface.

Kofi sat on the riverbank, feeling the warmth of a secret joy blossoming in his heart. He realized that some treasures are meant to be cherished quietly, kept close like a special song shared only between us and the universe.
