The Toad and the Donkey

African Folktales

A beloved African folktale retold for young readers — rich with wisdom, wonder, and timeless lessons.

In the golden savanna of Africa, a loud and lively Donkey loved to laugh, his joyous bray echoing across the plains. He chuckled at his friends, saying, "Look at Goat's wobbly legs! HEE-HAW!" or "Crocodile is so slow on land! HEE-HAW!" But what made him laugh the most was Toad. "Look at him HOP! My one step is a thousand of yours, silly Toad!" Toad, sitting quietly on his lily pad, listened for three whole days before finally speaking up. “How about a race tomorrow?”

As the sun peeked over the horizon the next day, all the animals gathered to watch. Donkey stood at the starting line, shining in the morning light, while Toad seemed small and ordinary. But little did Donkey know, Toad had called upon every friend and family member he could find, and they were all hiding along the racecourse—behind hills, at the river, and by the grand baobab tree.

With a loud THUMP, THUMP, THUMP, Donkey took off down the path, dreaming of victory. He raced over the first hill, but to his surprise, there was a Toad lounging on a rock, casually polishing its foot. "Ah! There you are!” it said lazily. Confused, Donkey galloped on faster.

Next, at the river, another Toad waved from the bank. “I've been waiting here!” it announced, and Donkey's heart raced even faster. Toads popped up at every landmark: the baobab tree, the muddy fork, the stone bridge, and the market tree, each smiling as Donkey rushed by.

Finally, he spotted the finish line! With all his strength, he sprinted towards it, but when he crossed, he collapsed in a heap, panting. To his shock, a Toad sat on the finish stone, grinning. “I’ve been here for twenty minutes!” it chirped.

Donkey's eyes widened in disbelief. “How... HOW?” Toad chuckled softly. “I’m just naturally fast!”

From that day on, Donkey understood the true power of teamwork and cleverness, even if it came from the smallest of friends. The animals of the savanna would forever share the tale of the clever Toads and the prideful Donkey, celebrating the magic of joining forces together.

The Moral of the Story
