On a sunny day, after a big flood, a tiny mongoose lay shivering on a muddy path. His fur was muddy, and his eyes were tightly shut. Just then, a kind family found him — a father, a mother, and their curious little boy named Teddy. They gently picked him up, wrapped him in soft cotton wool, and warmed him by the crackling fire. As the warmth spread, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi opened his bright red eyes and shook off the mud. Teddy gasped with delight. “Let’s name him Rikki-Tikki-Tavi!” he shouted, imitating the chattering sound of the mongoose — rikk-tikk-tikki-tikki-tchk!
From that moment, Rikki-Tikki became part of their family. He dashed around the house and garden, poking into everything, climbing on shoulders, and darting through the grass with his tail held high. But one eerie evening, he heard a chilling sound that made his fur stand on end — a low, cold hiss. “Who dares enter my garden?” whispered a deep voice. Out slithered a giant black cobra, Nag, the fearsome ruler of the garden, followed closely by his wife, Nagaina.
Rikki-Tikki’s heart raced with bravery as he knew he had to protect Teddy and his family. That night, he kept a watchful eye, and when Nag slithered into the bathroom, he sprang into action! With a mighty leap, he sunk his teeth into Nag’s neck! They tumbled and thrashed, but in the end, Nag lay still. However, Nagaina was furious! She vowed revenge on Rikki-Tikki for her hidden eggs.
Racing to the melon patch, Rikki-Tikki smashed twenty-four eggs but saved the last one for a trick. When Nagaina came to strike, he called, “Look at your last egg!” Her eyes widened, and she lunged for it. Quick as a flash, Rikki-Tikki chased her down into her dark burrow. After a long, dusty battle, he emerged victorious!
The garden burst into joy! Birds sang and frogs croaked, while Teddy scooped Rikki-Tikki into his arms, whispering, “You saved us!” From that day on, no cobra dared to enter the garden again. Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, the tiny hero, stood tall, ready for any adventure that lay ahead, proving that even the smallest creatures can protect those they love with great courage.
