The Three Lamps of the World

Vikram & Betaal Tales

A spine-tingling Vikram and Betaal riddle — where a brave king must answer or lose everything!

The wind swirled like a playful puppy through the tall trees, carrying the sweet scent of flowers blooming all around. At the edge of the world, where the sun dipped into the ocean and night wrapped its cloak over everything, three magical lamps stood tall on stone pillars, twinkling like stars. Vikram marched toward them, his heart racing with excitement, while Betaal, a cheeky spirit, floated beside him. “Ah, Vikram,” he said with a rumble, “listen closely to this tale.”

Each lamp was cared for by a dedicated hermit. Shankara, with his long white beard, had watched over his lamp for sixty years, and it glowed like a golden sun. Devaki, a kind lady with gentle eyes, had tended to her lamp for thirty years, offering light to lost travelers, even if it flickered a bit. Then there was Rajan, a young man who had guarded his lamp for just five years, dreaming of shining as brightly as the others.

But one stormy night, a child's terrified cry pierced the air, “HELP!” A family was trapped in a rushing flood! Without thinking, Rajan dashed into the stormy night, leaving his flickering lamp behind. For three daring days, he fought the wild river, rescuing the family and carrying the children to safety. Exhausted but proud, he returned only to find his lamp dark and cold.

“Oh no!” he cried, falling to his knees. Shankara watched with kind eyes as Rajan begged for help. With a gentle nod, Shankara reignited Rajan’s lamp, which flickered to life, though small and timid.

As the gods gathered to see the lamps, Shankara’s shone the brightest, Devaki’s glowed steady, and Rajan’s was faint. “Which hermit has fulfilled their duty?” Betaal asked, his voice smooth and curious. Vikram pondered, then spoke from his heart, “It’s not just about shining bright. Rajan's light may be small, but it comes from his brave heart that saved others.”

Betaal's eyes sparkled with admiration, and the stars twinkled brighter than ever. As Vikram turned to leave, he felt the warmth of the lamps, not just as glowing stones, but as symbols of bravery, kindness, and the true spirit of light in the world.
