The Three Dolls

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

Once upon a time, in the magnificent court of Emperor Akbar, an excited sculptor burst through the grand doors, clutching a shiny wooden box. His eyes twinkled with mischief as he announced, “Your Majesty, I present a challenge! Inside this box are three identical dolls. Can your wise court figure out which one is the best, the average, and the worst?” With a dramatic flair, he opened the box to reveal three dazzling dolls, each one sparkling under the golden light. They stood proudly on a soft, velvet cloth, with rosy cheeks and shimmering hair that glimmered like stars.

The courtiers, dressed in their finest clothes, leaned in closer, scratching their heads in confusion. They examined the dolls from every angle, but no one could find a difference! One by one, they shook their heads, feeling puzzled and defeated. The sculptor’s smile grew wider, filled with pride.

Then, Birbal, the cleverest of them all, stepped forward with a curious gleam in his eye. He picked up the first doll and inspected it closely. Suddenly, he noticed a tiny hole hidden in its ear! “Bring me three thin wires!” he called out, excitement bubbling in the air.

The courtiers hurried to fetch the wires. With a grin, Birbal inserted the first wire into the first doll’s ear. WHSSST! It shot straight through to the other side! The crowd gasped in amazement. Next, he took the second doll and slipped the wire inside. POP! It tumbled right out of the doll's mouth! Laughter erupted in the court, and even the sculptor looked nervous.

Finally, Birbal picked up the third doll. He carefully inserted the wire, but this time, it vanished into the doll like a secret disappearing into the night! The audience held their breath, eyes wide with suspense. With a triumphant smile, Birbal announced, “The third doll is the best! It keeps secrets safe, like hidden treasures. The second doll is the worst, spilling secrets like a leaky bucket! And the first doll, while just average, lets secrets flow in one ear and out the other.”

The court burst into applause and laughter, marveling at Birbal’s cleverness. Even the sculptor bowed in admiration. That day, everyone learned that true friendship is like a sturdy treasure chest—it keeps secrets safe and sound, tucked away in a cozy corner of the heart.
