The Thirsty Crow

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

On a hot summer day, the sun shone brightly in the sky, making everything sparkle like gold. A clever Crow soared high above the fields, her wings flapping with determination. She was on an important quest—a quest for water! The grass shimmered, but the ponds and streams had disappeared, leaving behind only dusty puddles that offered no relief. Her throat felt dry and scratchy, just like an old tree’s bark.

Suddenly, she spotted something interesting by a little cottage—a clay pitcher sitting quietly in the shade. Curiosity twinkled in her eyes as she swooped down to investigate. Peering inside, she saw water gleaming at the bottom, sparkling like a treasure chest full of gems. “Oh, sweet water!” she chirped excitedly. But when she tried to reach it, her beak couldn’t quite dip low enough. The water seemed to tease her, like a playful kitten hiding a favorite toy.

Frustrated, the Crow flapped her wings and nudged the pitcher, but it didn’t budge. “What should I do?” she wondered, feeling like the world was closing in. Just then, she spotted shiny pebbles scattered on the ground nearby! An idea fluttered into her mind like a butterfly. “What if I could raise the water?” she thought, her heart fluttering with hope.

With a joyful caw, she picked up a pebble and dropped it into the pitcher. Plink! The sound echoed, and she watched as the water rose just a little. Encouraged, she dropped in another pebble, and another! Each plink made her heart soar. The sun beat down, but she was too excited to stop.

Finally, after what felt like a grand adventure, the water was close enough to reach! With a happy hop, she dipped her beak into the cool liquid and drank deeply. “Ahhh, what a wonderful taste!” she exclaimed, her thirst finally quenched.

Feeling proud and joyful, the Crow soared back into the sky, her wings sparkling like a rainbow. She had faced a challenge and found a way to succeed through clever thinking and patience. With the sun shining brightly above, the clever Crow flew away, knowing she had discovered not just water, but the magic of her own imagination.
