The Thief Who Missed the Obvious

Tenali Raman Tales

A hilarious Tenali Raman tale where wit, humour, and a sharp mind save the day!

Once upon a time, in a land where the sun shone bright and the roads twisted like ribbons, there lived a clever traveler named Tenali Raman. With a glint in his eye and a heart full of adventure, he strolled along a winding path when a stranger joined him. The stranger was chatty, but Tenali noticed something strange: the man kept glancing at Tenali's traveling bag, his eyes darting like curious sparrows.

As night fell, they arrived at a cozy rest house, where they enjoyed a delicious meal of lentils and fresh bread. Tenali, feeling sleepy and satisfied, lay down and soon began to snore like a gentle thunderstorm. But the sneaky stranger crept across the room like a shadow, peeking under Tenali's pillow and rummaging through his coat pockets. “Nothing!” he grumbled, his frustration growing. Then he opened Tenali's bag and searched its contents grain by grain. Still, he found absolutely nothing!

The next day, their journey continued to the bustling town of Tirupati, filled with bright stalls of fruits and spices. As they prepared to part ways, the stranger suddenly grabbed Tenali's sleeve, looking desperate. “I must confess,” he said, his eyes wide with worry. “I’m a thief! I’ve stolen from many travelers, but you... you have nothing! Where is your treasure?”

With a twinkle in his eye, Tenali replied, “Oh, I knew you were a thief from the start.” The man's face turned pale. “You knew? But how?”

“Why would I tell you?” Tenali smiled slyly. “I simply put my money somewhere you would never think to look.”

“Where?!” the thief gasped, nearly in tears from frustration.

Tenali leaned closer and whispered, “Did you check under your own pillow?”

Suddenly, the thief’s face turned as white as a ghost. “I hid it under YOUR pillow every night!” Tenali explained cheerfully. “I thought a clever thief would search everywhere except the place he sleeps!”

The thief stared at Tenali, stunned, and then burst into hearty laughter that rang through the dusty streets! “You are the cleverest man I’ve ever met!” he declared, wiping tears from his eyes.

With a wink, Tenali waved goodbye and continued his journey, leaving behind a thief transformed, who learned that sometimes the best treasures are hidden in the last place you’d expect!
