The Sword That Weighs Gold

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

On a sunny morning, a soft knock tickled the door of Birbal's cozy home. When he opened it, he found two visitors: a sweet old lady with shimmering silver hair and a crooked walking stick, alongside her daughter-in-law. Their clothes looked like they had been patched many times, and their faces were filled with worry but sparkling with hope.

“Sir,” the old lady began, her voice trembling like a leaf in the breeze. “My son fought bravely in Emperor Akbar’s army for twenty long years, but now… he is gone. We have nothing left. Please, I beg you for help.” Birbal, with his gentle smile, felt his heart tug. “Don’t worry,” he said warmly. “Bring the sword your son used to battle and come to the royal court tomorrow. Trust me.”

The next morning, the two women entered the grand royal court, their hearts pounding like tiny drums. The room was a dazzling sight, filled with colorful tapestries, shining jewels, and curious faces fixed on them. With shaking hands, the old woman presented a faded sword, rusted and dull, looking like a forgotten treasure.

“Your Majesty,” she said, her voice quivering, “this is my son’s sword. He fought valiantly with it. I wish to offer it to you.” Emperor Akbar frowned deeply at the old sword. “This is useless!” he declared, waving his hand dismissively. “Give it back, along with five gold coins.”

The old woman’s heart sank like a wilting flower. But Birbal stepped forward, his eyes sparkling with mischief. “Your Majesty, the royal touch is said to turn everything to gold! Yet this sword is dull. How curious!”

Suddenly, Akbar's eyes twinkled with excitement. “Weigh that sword!” he commanded. The guards rushed to find a scale, and soon the sword was weighed. Everyone gasped! The sword was much heavier than they thought!

“Give the old woman gold coins equal to the sword’s weight!” Akbar boomed proudly. Tears of joy streamed down the old woman’s cheeks as gold coins were counted and placed in her hands. She hugged her daughter-in-law tight, their hearts brimming with gratitude.

As they left the court, their faces glowed with happiness, knowing that true worth comes from the heart, shining brighter than any gold.
