The Sultan's Demand

Tenali Raman Tales

A hilarious Tenali Raman tale where wit, humour, and a sharp mind save the day!

In a land filled with sparkling stars, King Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagar set off on a grand adventure to the splendid palace of Sultan Adil Shah in Delhi. The air was thick with the delightful aromas of spicy curries, and the joyful sounds of music floated through the colorful courtyard where dancers twirled like vibrant flowers in the breeze. Everyone laughed and celebrated, but little did they know that the Sultan had a peculiar request brewing in his mind.

As King Krishnadevaraya enjoyed the festivities, the Sultan suddenly slammed his fist on the table, startling everyone around. “This is AMAZING!” he roared. “I want you to REWRITE the Mahabharata!” The king's smile froze, and a chill tickled his heart. “Rewrite it?” he echoed, feeling the weight of the Sultan’s demand.

“Yes!” the Sultan exclaimed, his eyes sparkling with excitement. “I want to be Dharmaraja, the greatest brother! Let my friends be the loyal Pandavas, and my enemies the sneaky Kauravas!” Panic bubbled in King Krishnadevaraya’s chest. What if he refused? War might break out! But if he agreed, he would unravel stories cherished for ages. Then, he spotted his clever friend, Tenali Raman, who wore a mischievous grin.

The next day, Tenali asked to see the Sultan. “Your Highness,” he began, his voice smooth as silk, “our finest poets are crafting a glorious Mahabharata, shining with your greatness!” The Sultan leaned closer, excitement sparkling in his eyes. But Tenali lowered his voice, “We have a... tiny problem.”

“What problem?” the Sultan asked, his eyebrows knitting together.

Tenali smiled slyly. “In the original Mahabharata, all five Pandava brothers shared ONE wife – the noble Draupadi. So, dear Sultan, if you become Dharmaraja, you would also share her!”

The Sultan’s delight turned to horror as he pictured the chaos of sharing a wife with four others. “STOP THE WRITING!” he thundered, jumping up so fast, his crown almost toppled off! “The Mahabharata shall remain as it is! Not a single word can be changed! EVER!”

With a graceful bow, Tenali stepped outside where King Krishnadevaraya awaited him. Both friends exchanged relieved smiles, knowing that the tales woven in the stars would remain untouched, like a magical treasure for all to cherish.
