The Bangles of the Empress

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

One bright and sunny morning in the palace of the great Emperor Akbar, the air buzzed with excitement. The emperor, with his twinkling eyes, had a playful challenge in mind. "Birbal!" he called, his voice echoing like a cheerful bell. "I bet you can't tell me how many bangles my lovely wife wears! You see her every day, after all!"

Birbal, wise and calm as a gentle river, smiled and said, "No, Your Majesty, I cannot." Akbar's face lit up like a cheeky kitten spotting a playful mouse. "Ha! How can that be? You see her hand every single day!"

"Come with me to the garden, Your Majesty," Birbal suggested, a hint of mischief dancing in his eyes. Curious, Akbar agreed, and they strolled through the magnificent palace, passing shimmering golden pillars and colorful tapestries that fluttered like butterflies.

Soon, they reached a winding stone staircase leading down to the enchanting garden, bursting with vibrant flowers swaying in the breeze. With each step, their feet went TAP, TAP, TAP on the cool stones. When they reached the bottom, Birbal turned to the emperor and asked, "Your Majesty, how many steps did we just climb?"

Akbar, full of confidence, opened his mouth to answer but then suddenly froze. He looked up at the staircase, then down, feeling a swirl of confusion. He had climbed these steps every day for years, yet he had never counted them! Frowning, he started counting, "One, two, three…" and lost track until he reached the twelfth step. Sheepishly, he scratched his head. "I… I didn’t know," he admitted, cheeks turning pink with embarrassment.

Birbal smiled gently. "And that is why I cannot count the bangles. We see the same things every day, but we often forget to really look."

As realization blossomed in Akbar's mind like a beautiful flower, he nodded, understanding that even the most ordinary things could hold extraordinary mysteries. With a joyful heart, he said, "Birbal, you’ve taught me something wonderful! Let us climb those twelve steps together once more!"

As they ascended, the sun shone brighter, casting a magical glow around them, and the garden hummed with the delightful secret of seeing things anew. Akbar felt as light as a feather, knowing that sometimes, the simplest moments could unlock the most amazing discoveries.
