The Grateful Sparrow

Japanese Folktales

A beautiful Japanese folktale of honour, kindness, and wonder — retold for young hearts.

In a snug little cottage by a whispering pine forest, an old man had a wonderful friend—a small brown sparrow. Each morning, the sparrow would dive into the garden, splashing merrily in the birdbath with a delightful SPLASH! Afterward, it would sing the most beautiful songs that floated through the air like sparkling butterflies. The old man, sipping his warm tea, felt happy sharing his dreams and stories with the little bird.

But not everyone loved the sparrow. The old man’s wife was a lady who counted everything—rice bags, coins, and cloth. To her, the sparrow was a troublesome thief, taking things without giving anything back. One sunny spring morning, she found the little bird had made a mess with her precious laundry starch. With a frown, she decided to teach the sparrow a lesson. In a hasty moment, she caught the bird and snipped its tongue with scissors!

When the old man returned home and learned what happened, his heart sank like a stone. He knew he had to find his feathered friend! The next morning, he ventured into the forest, feeling both scared and hopeful. He wandered through twisting paths and towering trees until he stumbled upon a magical clearing sparkling in the sunlight. To his surprise, there was an inn run by sparrows!

The little bird, now free and happy, sang joyfully as it served steaming cups of tea and delicious food. The old man was welcomed to a grand feast filled with grilled fish and sweet rice cakes. At the end, the sparrow gave him two beautifully wrapped boxes—one light and small, the other heavy and big. The old man chose the small box, thinking of kindness. When he opened it later, silk, shining coins, and rice overflowed!

Meanwhile, the old man's wife, hearing of the feast, rushed to the mountain, demanding the biggest gift. Without thinking, she grabbed the heavy box. But when she opened it, a loud SCREEEEECH! HISSSS! CRASH! erupted, sending her tumbling back! The old man watched from afar, knowing she would learn something important.

Later, as they sat in the kitchen, the sparrow chirped a soft tune, reminding them both of the joy that kindness brings.

The Moral of the Story

"Being kind brings happiness, while being greedy can lead to surprises you don’t want."

Japanese folktales carry wisdom as gentle as cherry blossoms — and lessons as strong as the mountains.
