The sun beamed brightly over the majestic palace of Emperor Akbar, casting golden rays that sparkled on the cool marble floors. One sunny afternoon, the Emperor clapped his hands, sending a shiver of anticipation through the courtiers who were enjoying sweet tea and lively chatter. “I have a CHALLENGE!” he announced, his eyes twinkling like stars. The courtiers perked up, their hearts thumping with excitement. “Tell me the difference between truth and falsehood in FOUR WORDS OR FEWER!”
The air buzzed with energy as the courtiers scratched their heads, furrowing their brows in thought. One brave courtier stepped forward, puffing out his chest. “Truth is always right!” he declared proudly. Akbar frowned, shaking his head. “That’s FIVE words! DISQUALIFIED!” Gasps echoed through the hall, and whispers of disappointment fluttered like butterflies.
Another hopeful courtier tried again. “Truth stands!” he exclaimed. But Akbar raised an eyebrow. “Two words, no explanation. REJECTED!” The tension thickened as a third courtier launched into a long, twisty speech filled with fancy words. Akbar’s eyes began to glaze over, and by the end, he needed a whole pot of tea just to stay awake! “Definitely rejected,” he sighed.
Just when it seemed that the challenge was impossible, a calm and clever voice floated through the air. It was Birbal, the Emperor's wisest advisor. All eyes turned to him in hope. “Four fingers,” he said with a grin, holding up his hand.
The court fell silent, waiting in suspense. “Four... fingers?” Akbar repeated, intrigued. Birbal pointed to his ear and then to his eye. “The distance between your ears and your eyes, Your Majesty — that is the distance between truth and falsehood!” he explained, measuring with his hand. “What you SEE with your own eyes is truth. What you hear might just be a tale.”
The courtiers blinked, confusion hanging in the air until laughter erupted, filling the hall with joy. “I’ve never measured a thought with a body part before!” chuckled Akbar, his eyes sparkling with delight. Birbal grinned, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “There’s always a first time, Your Majesty!"
As the sun set, painting the sky in swirling shades of pink and orange, the courtiers chattered excitedly about what they had seen and learned, leaving behind the tangled web of words for the clear and bright truth that sparkled before their very own eyes.
