The Fox and the Rooster

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Once upon a time on a sunny farm, there lived a proud Rooster who believed his voice was the best in the world. Every morning, he stood tall on the wooden fence, puffed out his chest, and crowed, “Cock-a-doodle-doo!” so loudly that it felt like the whole farm had gathered just to hear him sing! His best friend, Dog, wagged his tail joyfully, loving every note.

One bright morning, Rooster fluttered with excitement. “Why should we stay here forever?” he chirped. “Let’s explore the world beyond the gate!” Dog’s ears perked up, and with a wag of his tail, he barked, “Let’s go on an adventure!”

With Rooster riding proudly on Dog’s back, they trotted down dusty paths, bounced through lush green fields, and splashed in sparkling streams that glittered like stars. They laughed and played, their hearts brimming with joy. But as evening fell, they reached a mysterious, shadowy forest where tall trees whispered secrets to each other. Dog looked around nervously. “We should find a safe place to sleep,” he suggested, his tail drooping a little.

Rooster spotted a cozy hollow tree. “This is perfect!” he exclaimed. “You can sleep below, and I’ll perch up high. No one will bother us!” As they settled in, both friends fell fast asleep, dreaming of their day.

When dawn painted the sky in soft pinks and golds, Rooster woke first. Feeling bold, he flapped his wings and crowed, “Cock-a-doodle-doo!” His voice echoed through the forest, awakening a sly fox nearby. The crafty fox perked up, and a wicked smile appeared on his face. “Breakfast!” he whispered.

“Oh, what a wonderful voice!” the fox called sweetly, eyes shining. “Please come down and sing for me!” Rooster, noticing the hungry gleam in the fox’s eyes, stayed calm. “Thank you! But my porter is sleeping below. If you want to hear my song, you must go to the little door at the base of the tree.”

Excited, the fox hurried to the door, his tail twitching. Inside, Dog had just woken up and was yawning when he spotted the fox’s nose poking through the opening. With a fierce growl, Dog sprang forward! The fox yelped in surprise and dashed away, racing through the bushes and vanishing into the forest like a shadow.

Rooster clucked with laughter, “Your growl was the best music this morning!” They shared breakfast, the sun rising higher and filling their hearts with warmth. Their adventure had taught them that while some may try to trick others, true friends always watch out for each other.
