The Tortoise and the Hare

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

On a bright and cheerful morning, a bustling meadow was alive with the sounds of happy animals. In the midst of all the fun, a boastful Hare was bouncing around, showing off his lightning-fast speed. "Zoom! Zoom!" he hollered, hopping in circles. "I can run faster than a shooting star! No one can beat me!" He laughed at the Snail slowly making his way and teased the little field mice scurrying about. But when he spotted a gentle Tortoise ambling by, he couldn’t help but shout, "Oh look, it’s the slowest creature in the meadow! By the time you cross the field, I’ll be halfway to the next village!"

The Tortoise smiled warmly, eyes sparkling with determination. "I may be slow, but I would love to race you!" he said, his voice steady and calm. The animals were astonished, then erupted in laughter. The clever Fox stepped in, marking a finish line with a bright flag waving in the breeze. With a dramatic flair, the race began!

As the Hare zoomed off like a flash, the Tortoise began his steady march, moving one tiny step at a time. "This is too easy," the Hare chuckled, glancing back to see the Tortoise still far behind. Feeling confident, he spotted a cozy patch of grass under a shady tree, curled up, and drifted into a peaceful nap, dreaming of trophies and glory.

Meanwhile, the Tortoise kept plodding forward, whispering to himself, "I can do this!" The sun shone brightly, and a gentle breeze encouraged him on. Time passed, and just as the Hare woke with a start, realizing he had overslept, he dashed toward the finish line, his heart racing!

But as he approached, he caught a glimpse of green ahead. It was the Tortoise! With one last burst of energy, the Tortoise crossed the finish line just moments before the Hare could reach him. The meadow erupted in cheers, the animals dancing around the Tortoise, who beamed with pride.

The Hare, astonished and humbled, approached the Tortoise. "I can’t believe it! You won! You taught me something important today," he said, ears drooping in surprise. From that day on, the Hare learned to value hard work, and the Tortoise became a shining example of perseverance. The meadow glowed a little brighter, filled with laughter and joy, as all the animals celebrated the power of never giving up.
