The Shield and the Spear

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

CLANG! CRASH! RATTLE! A grand craftsman, tall as a tree and dressed in bright, colorful robes, wheeled a cart bursting with shiny spears and dazzling shields right into the magnificent court of Emperor Akbar. His arms were as thick as tree branches, and his voice boomed like thunder, making the chandeliers sway. "YOUR IMPERIAL MAJESTY!" he declared proudly, puffing out his chest. "I am the GREATEST weapon-maker in ALL THE WORLD! My shields are crafted so perfectly that NOTHING—no sword, no arrow, no spear—can pierce them! And my spears are sharper than the sharpest teeth of a dragon!"

The courtiers gasped and clapped their hands in delight, while Emperor Akbar leaned forward, intrigued by the man’s bold claims. But from the back of the court, Birbal, the emperor's clever advisor with a twinkle in his eye, raised one finger. "Excuse me," he said sweetly, "I believe I can show you something surprising."

The craftsman wheeled around, his grand mustache quivering with indignation. "YOU?! Show ME anything? That's IMPOSSIBLE!" he blustered, his voice rattling the curtains.

"Oh, I trust your skills completely," Birbal replied with a calm smile. With a confident stride, he picked up one of the craftsman’s gleaming shields and held it with great care. The court fell silent, eyes wide with anticipation. Then he selected one of the shining spears and said, "Hold the shield high, my friend. I shall attempt to pierce it!"

The craftsman's hands trembled as he raised the shield, his eyes darting between Birbal and the glimmering spear. The air thickened with suspense. If the shield was truly unpierceable, then the spear must be a trick. But if the spear was as sharp as claimed, the shield would surely yield.

As the craftsman’s face turned a brilliant shade of red, like a ripe tomato, he realized he had unwittingly created a puzzling riddle for himself! The court held its breath, and Emperor Akbar’s laughter rang through the grand hall like joyful bells.

“Birbal, you always find the sharpest answers hidden in the simplest questions!”

The humbled craftsman quietly gathered his cart, with new understanding shining in his eyes. As he left the court, his once-boisterous claims faded into whispers like a forgotten dream, teaching everyone that sometimes, it's the loudest voices that hide the softest truths.
