The Sheep and the Dogs

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

In a sunny meadow bursting with colorful flowers and rolling green hills, a fluffy flock of Sheep frolicked, nibbling at sweet grass and playing games. These cheerful Sheep were always watched over by their brave friends, a pack of strong Dogs. With their loud barks and wagging tails, the Dogs kept the Sheep safe from any danger lurking nearby.

But in the dark, twisty woods, a cunning group of Wolves watched the meadow with hungry eyes. They didn't like the Dogs, for as long as the Dogs were around, the Sheep were safe. One clever old Wolf, with a coat as gray as storm clouds, devised a sneaky plan. “Instead of chasing the Sheep,” he said, “let’s win them over with friendly words!”

The next day, the old Wolf tiptoed up the hill, his smile shining like sunshine on water. “Hello, lovely Sheep!” he called in a smooth voice. “Isn't it sad that we can’t be friends? The Dogs are just loud and scary! If you send them away, we could have so much fun together!”

The Sheep glanced at one another, their eyes wide. “Maybe he’s right,” whispered a little Sheep. “The Dogs can be a bit rough,” said another, swishing its fluffy tail. But then the wise, oldest Sheep stepped forward, her twinkling eyes shining. “Don't be fooled, dear friends! The Dogs protect us!”

But the enchanting words of the Wolf made the Sheep’s hearts flutter. Hesitatingly, they called out to the Dogs, “Thank you, brave friends, but we can manage without you. Please go away!” The Dogs looked worried but left, glancing back with unease.

As night fell and the meadow grew still, a chill swept through the air. Suddenly, the Wolves returned, but this time they were not friendly at all! With fierce growls, they pounced, and the Sheep scattered in panic. Their joyful meadow turned into a scene of chaos!

When the night was dark and silent, the Sheep realized their grave mistake. They missed their loyal Dogs who had kept them safe. From that day on, they welcomed back their brave friends with happy bleats, cherishing the ones who truly cared for them and learned the lesson of true loyalty.
