The Short Shawl

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In the shining kingdom of India, there was a jolly Emperor named Akbar, known far and wide for his laughter and love of fun. One bright morning, while savoring his sweet mango juice, he received a splendid gift—a shimmering silk shawl that glowed like the sun! It was two meters long, and a twinkle of mischief sparkled in Akbar’s eye.

“Gather ’round, my courtiers!” he boomed, lying on his fluffy royal cot. “Your challenge is to cover me completely with this shawl! Not even a single toe must peek out! The one who succeeds will take Birbal’s place as chief minister!” The courtiers buzzed with excitement, their faces lighting up like fireflies.

The first courtier puffed out his chest and draped the shawl over Akbar’s head. But oh no! His royal feet were as visible as two little birds hiding under a blanket! “Fail!” the Emperor roared in laughter. The second courtier tried, covering the Emperor’s feet but leaving his shoulders exposed. Akbar shivered, and the court erupted with giggles. One by one, the courtiers tried and failed, their dreams deflating like balloons.

Just then, a gentle tap-tap-tap echoed through the hall. It was Birbal, the cleverest of them all! He stepped in, curiosity shining in his eyes. “What’s all this fuss?” he asked. Akbar explained with a chuckle, and Birbal’s eyes twinkled with an idea. “Your Majesty, could you curl up your knees and make yourself a little smaller?”

Intrigued, Akbar followed Birbal’s suggestion and curled up snugly. With a graceful swoop, Birbal draped the shawl over the Emperor again. To everyone’s astonishment, it covered him perfectly from head to toe! The courtiers gasped, their mouths wide open in disbelief.

Birbal smiled knowingly. “Sometimes, we need to adapt to what we have instead of wishing for more.” Akbar burst into laughter, his heart light with joy. “Birbal, you will keep your position as chief minister! It seems these gentlemen have shown us why they are unfit for the role!”

From that day on, the kingdom thrived in creativity and joy, proving that with a little flexibility, even the trickiest challenges could be solved!
