The Donkey in the Shade

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Once upon a time, in a sparkling land where the sun shone like a giant golden coin, two travelers trudged through a vast, shimmering desert. Between them was a little donkey, his coat glistening and his hooves sinking into the hot, sandy ground. One traveler, puffed up with pride, owned the donkey, while the other borrowed him for their long journey.

As the sun climbed higher and the air shimmered with heat, their mouths felt as dry as old leaves. Suddenly, the donkey spotted a tiny patch of shade beneath his belly, and the moment he stepped into it, the traveler who had borrowed him rushed in too. "Hey! Get out of there!" the owner shouted, flailing his arms. "That shade is mine because the donkey is mine!"

"But I hired him!" the traveler protested, stamping his foot. "Surely, the shade belongs to me as well!" Their voices rose like the fluttering wings of a startled bird, echoing across the desert. "I need that shade!" cried the traveler, while the owner insisted, "You have no right!"

The two men grew angrier, their faces turning red like ripe strawberries, and forgot all about the sweltering heat and their tired legs. Meanwhile, the donkey listened with boredom. With a huff, he thought, “Why fight over something so small?” Deciding he’d had enough, he trotted away, leaving tiny hoof prints in the sand.

When the men finally paused, they turned to find the donkey was a tiny speck far in the distance. "Oh no!" the traveler cried. "We've lost the donkey!" "Now we have nothing!" moaned the owner, feeling the sun's prickly heat.

As they trudged on, the weight of the sun pressing heavy on their backs, they realized too late that their argument had cost them not only the shade but also their faithful little donkey. With every step, they felt a flicker of understanding spark within them. From that day on, whenever they journeyed, they remembered the tale of the stubborn donkey and the precious shade, knowing that together they could weather any storm.
