The Servant Who Spoke in His Sleep

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

In the vibrant city of Vardhamana, where the air smelled of sweet mangoes and bright flowers danced in the breeze, there lived a generous merchant named Raghav. His heart was as big as his riches, and everyone loved him, from the tiniest ladybug to the grandest elephant. But one sunny day, during a marvelous celebration for his daughter, mischief brewed in the shadows.

As laughter and music filled the air, Raghav spotted a scruffy servant named Kavi lounging in the finest chair meant for the king's guests. "Out you go!" Raghav boomed, pointing like a stormy cloud. With a face as red as a ripe tomato, Kavi was dragged away, his heart heavy with embarrassment.

That night, while the city twinkled under the moonlight, Kavi lay wide awake, his mind swirling with a plan for revenge. Days later, while sweeping near the king's grand bed, Kavi saw the king waking from a dream. With a sly smile, he whispered, "Oh dear! I heard that Raghav hugged the queen in the garden!" The king shot up, his eyes as big as saucers. "What? Tell me more!" he roared, confusion dancing in his mind.

Kavi pretended to tremble, begging for forgiveness, and soon dark clouds settled over Raghav's friendship with the king. But instead of getting angry, Raghav invited Kavi to his home, showering him with gifts and kindness. Kavi felt a pinch of guilt, but mischief still sparkled in his eyes.

A few mornings later, Kavi muttered, "How strange... the king munching cucumbers in the lavatory!" This time, the king chuckled, realizing how silly that sounded. With a clap of his hands, he called for Raghav. "Bring him here! I was wrong!" Banners flew high as Raghav arrived, joy blooming in his heart.

From that day on, Raghav treated everyone with kindness, understanding that even the smallest actions can create the biggest ripples. And so, laughter and friendship filled the streets of Vardhamana once again, where every heart—big or small—shone bright.
