The Hardworking Farmer's Treasure

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Old Farmer Brennan was as wise as the ancient hills, with hands as rough as tree bark and a face crinkled like a dried apple. He had a magical farm where plants grew tall and animals danced in the sunlight. But Farmer Brennan’s three sons, Tom, Jake, and Sam, liked to sit in the shade of the big oak tree rather than work the fields. They dreamed of treasures falling from the sky, wishing for easy money to land in their laps.

One golden evening, with the sky painted in orange and pink, Farmer Brennan called his sons to him. “My dear boys,” he whispered softly, “I buried a treasure somewhere on this farm. But I can’t quite remember where! If you want it, you must dig deep and search everywhere!” Their eyes sparkled with excitement. Treasure! Gold! Jewels!

With shovels in hand, they raced outside, hearts pounding with thrill. They dug by the barn, upturning dirt like tiny clouds. They hurried to the orchard, shovels clinking against roots. They even dug in the vegetable patch, sending dirt flying like little storms! But as hours passed, their laughter turned to sighs. The sun blazed above them, and soon, tired and muddy, they slumped in the middle of the field.

“Father must have forgotten,” Tom sighed, wiping sweat from his brow. “Or maybe he never buried anything at all!” But the earth was soft beneath them. Instead of giving up, they decided to plant seeds in the fresh soil.

Days turned into weeks, and to their astonishment, tiny green shoots began to peek through the ground. The farm blossomed into a magical wonderland, bursting with vibrant vegetables and juicy fruits! When autumn arrived, their once-barren land was filled with golden wheat and colorful harvests. Standing amidst the bounty, the boys finally understood. The real treasure wasn’t hidden gold or jewels; it was the joy of working together, the beauty of their thriving farm, and the love they shared.

From that moment on, the three brothers embraced the magic of hard work, discovering that the greatest treasures are the ones you create with your own hands.
