The Rooster and the Fox

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Once upon a time, on a vibrant farm filled with sunny clucks and gentle moos, there lived two proud roosters named Rufus and Rocky. With bright red combs and feathers that sparkled like jewels in the sunlight, they were the stars of the barnyard. But there was one thing they could never agree on: who was the mightiest rooster on the farm!

One glorious morning, the tension between Rufus and Rocky reached its peak. They flapped their wings and strutted around each other, feathers flying like colorful confetti! "I'm the best!" Rufus squawked, trying to peck at Rocky's feet. "No, I am!" Rocky replied, dodging and dancing away. The hens gathered, eyes wide with excitement, as the two roosters battled.

At last, Rufus, with a triumphant flap, chased Rocky away. Feeling like a champion, Rufus soared to the tallest spot on the barn roof, puffed up with pride. "Cock-a-doodle-doo! I am the greatest rooster ever!" he crowed, his voice echoing across the fields.

But high above, an eagle with sharp eyes listened, circling like a shadow. The eagle spotted Rufus, shining bright against the sky. With a swoosh, it swooped down, faster than a shooting star! Rufus, caught in his celebration, didn’t notice the danger until it was too late. Before he could even squawk, the eagle's talons grabbed him, whisking him away like a leaf in the wind!

The farmyard erupted in clucks and gasps. The hens looked around, bewildered at the sudden silence. Meanwhile, Rocky peered from behind the old shed, relief washing over him. He had watched everything unfold and understood something important: while Rufus had shouted his victory to the world, he had also invited trouble.

As the sun set behind the hills, the farm became quieter and wiser, knowing that true strength often lies in being humble and letting actions speak louder than words. The animals settled down for the night, grateful for the peacefulness that returned to their home.
