The Rooster and the Ruby

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Once upon a time, on a cheerful farm where the sun always smiled, there lived a clever Rooster named Rufus. Each morning, Rufus would strut around, his colorful feathers sparkling in the sunlight as he scratched at the soft, warm earth, looking for breakfast.

One bright morning, while digging eagerly in the dirt, Rufus felt something hard and smooth under his claws. Curious, he scratched even harder and uncovered a dazzling ruby! It shone like a tiny sun, glowing with a fiery red light. Rufus tilted his head in amazement. “Wow! What a shiny treasure!” he exclaimed, imagining himself as a king with a crown sparkling with jewels.

But just then, his tummy rumbled loudly. “Oh dear! I’m so hungry!” He forgot about the beautiful ruby and returned to searching for tasty breakfast. Suddenly, he spotted a shadow swooping overhead. Rufus looked up to see a sharp-eyed hawk flying in circles above! “Yikes! If that hawk sees me, I could be its lunch!” His heart raced with fright.

Thinking quickly, Rufus grabbed the ruby in his beak and dashed toward a bush. He found a cozy spot where he could hide the jewel, covering it with leaves and twigs until it was perfectly camouflaged. “Phew! Now I’m safe!” he chirped with relief.

With the ruby hidden, Rufus resumed his quest for food, scratching and pecking until he discovered a plump, juicy worm! “Yum!” he cheered, gobbling it up with joy. As the sun began to set, painting the sky in beautiful colors, Rufus looked back at the bush where he had hidden the ruby.

He chuckled, realizing that while the ruby was dazzling, it could never satisfy his hunger. From that day on, Rufus continued his adventures on the farm, always searching for breakfast and cherishing the simple joys that truly mattered to him.
