The Ring in the Well

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

Once upon a time, in a vibrant kingdom filled with emerald fields and sparkling rivers, Emperor Akbar rode proudly with his royal hunting party. The sun painted the sky bright gold, while cheerful birds flitted about, singing sweet songs. Suddenly, a terrible thing happened! As the emperor waved to his loyal subjects, his beautiful ring—a dazzling emerald that sparkled like a dragon’s eye—slipped right off his finger!

The ring danced in the air, shining in the sunlight, before it disappeared with a plop into a mysterious dry well by the road. CLINK! CLINK! CLINK! It bounced down the stone walls like a playful rabbit before landing softly in a muddy pile at the bottom.

“Oh no!” cried the courtiers, peering into the dark well. “It’s so deep! How will we ever get it back?” Panic spread among them like wildflowers in spring. But then, the clever Birbal, the emperor’s wisest advisor, stepped forward, his eyes twinkling with a clever idea.

“What do we have with us?” he asked the servants. They listed their supplies: horses, food, water, and a peculiar lump of fresh cow dung from the last village. Birbal’s smile grew wider. With a mischievous gleam, he announced, “I have a plan!”

He took the cow dung and tied a heavy stone to one end of a long piece of string. With careful hands, he shaped the dung into a sticky ball and lowered it into the dark well. Inch by inch, he guided it down, feeling the anticipation grow.

Suddenly, the soft dung pressed against the lost ring! Birbal held his breath as the sun warmed the mixture, baking it tight around the emerald. With a steady pull on the string, he heaved, and there it was—the emperor's ring, sparkling brilliantly like a star in the sky, firmly stuck in the dried lump of cow dung!

Cheers erupted from the court, filling the air with joy. “Birbal, you never cease to amaze me!” Akbar exclaimed, his voice brimming with admiration.

And so, with a pinch of creativity and a dash of cleverness, they discovered that even in the trickiest of situations, a solution is always waiting to be found.
