The Riddle of Justice

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

Once upon a sunny morning in the lively city of Fatehpur Sikri, Emperor Akbar sat on his grand throne, looking as puzzled as a cat trapped in a puzzle box. The air was filled with the sweet scent of pastries, and the sound of busy servants echoed in the court, but Akbar's heart felt heavy. He turned to his clever friend Birbal, whose eyes sparkled like stars at midnight. “Birbal,” he sighed, “everyone says God is just, but look around! The rich feast while the poor struggle. Is this fair?”

A hush fell over the room, and even the colorful parakeets at the windows stopped chirping, eager to hear Birbal’s wisdom. With a playful grin, Birbal replied, “Your Majesty, may I ask you something first?” Akbar nodded, his curiosity piqued. “Do you pay all your servants the same?”

The Emperor frowned. “Of course not! They earn according to their skills!”

“And if someone does a fantastic job?” Birbal raised an eyebrow, like a magician about to reveal a thrilling trick.

“Then I reward them!” Akbar exclaimed, puffing with pride.

“But what if someone is lazy or dishonest?” asked Birbal, leaning closer.

“Then I must encourage them to do better!” Akbar said, his voice rising.

“Then, Your Majesty,” Birbal chuckled, “would it be fair to call YOU unjust?”

Akbar’s mouth opened in surprise, but no words came out. He leaned back, the realization washing over him like a warm sunbeam. “So, God is like the best accountant?”

“Yes!” Birbal beamed, his smile lighting up the room. “Life is a grand tapestry woven with our efforts! We just need to learn to see the patterns!”

As laughter bubbled in the court, Akbar felt light as a feather. He understood now that though life seemed puzzling, everything would align perfectly in time, just like the moon and stars in the night sky.
