Once upon a time, far above the Earth, the Moon God gazed down, curious about the wonderful creatures below. Disguised as a frail old beggar with tattered clothes and a crooked stick, he decided to visit a lush, green forest where three special friends lived: a mischievous Monkey, a clever Otter, and a gentle Rabbit.
As the old man hobbled along, he whispered with a shaky voice, “Oh, dear friends, I am so hungry! Can you share a bit of food with me?” The Monkey's eyes twinkled with excitement. “I can help!” he shouted, dashing up the tallest tree. With a swoosh and a swing, he returned with his arms full of juicy mangoes, ripe figs, and sweet bananas. “Here you go, old friend! Enjoy!” he cheered, dropping the delicious fruits at the beggar’s feet.
Next, the Otter splashed into the cool river and emerged with a shiny fish held proudly in his jaws. “Here, grandfather! Roast this! It will warm your heart!” he exclaimed, water dripping from his whiskers.
But the Rabbit felt a little sad, searching around the meadow for something to give. All he found was a bundle of tender grass. “I’m so sorry,” he said softly, his ears drooping. “This is all I have. Grass... not fit for you.” The beggar smiled kindly, yet the Rabbit’s heart was heavy with worry.
Suddenly, inspiration struck! “I have nothing worthy,” he said with newfound courage. “But I can offer you… myself!” Gathering sticks, he built a small fire, feeling a mix of fear and bravery. “Please, dear stranger,” he said, “cook me. I want you to be nourished tonight.” With a mighty leap, he jumped into the flames!
To his astonishment, the fire didn’t burn him! Instead, the old beggar transformed into a magnificent figure glowing with bright, silvery light — it was the God of the Moon! His voice rang out like music in the night sky. “I came to test your hearts,” he declared. “The Monkey shared, and the Otter gave with courage. But Rabbit… Rabbit gave everything! I will always treasure your selflessness.”
As the Moon God traced the Rabbit’s silhouette onto his glowing face, the full moon shone brightly that night, revealing the Rabbit’s shadow. He became a lasting symbol of love and sacrifice, reminding everyone that the greatest gift comes from the heart.
