The Arrow and the Emperor

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

On a bright and sunny day, Emperor Akbar rode through a magical mango grove, where the air was filled with the sweet scent of juicy fruit. The leaves giggled in the gentle breeze, and the birds sang cheerful melodies high above. Beside him, his clever friend Birbal trotted along, delighting in the beauty of the day. Suddenly, WHOOOOSH! An arrow zipped past Akbar's ear, startling his horse and sending guards rushing in with swords drawn.

The culprit was a young boy, no older than twelve, trembling like a leaf in a storm. "Why would you shoot an arrow at your Emperor?" Akbar's voice boomed like rolling thunder. The boy stammered, pointing at a tall mango tree. "I just wanted a mango! I missed! I swear, I didn't know you were here!"

Akbar’s eyes flashed with anger. "You let an arrow fly at me! You shall be punished by arrow!" The guards stiffened, and a soldier stepped forward, bow drawn tight. The boy's face turned as white as a cloud, squeezing his eyes shut, bracing for the worst.

Just then, Birbal’s calm voice cut through the tension. "Your Majesty! Let's recreate what happened!" He pointed to the mango high on the branch. "Let the soldier aim for that mango, and miss, just as the boy did!" The crowd gasped, the air thick with suspense.

Akbar blinked in surprise, looking from Birbal to the boy, and slowly, his anger began to fade. With a deep sigh, he commanded, “Release him.” As the boy dashed away, heart racing with joy, a mango dropped from the tree with a cheerful PLOP! It rolled right by him, as if the tree was celebrating the boy’s freedom.

The grove burst into laughter, and the sweet scent of mangoes filled the air, reminding everyone that sometimes, it’s wise to pause and think before reacting, even for the Emperor himself.
