The Three Statues

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In a vibrant kingdom bursting with colors and laughter, there lived a wise Emperor named Akbar. His court was a dazzling place filled with artists, jewelers, and scholars, all busy creating wonders. One sunny day, an unusual challenge arrived from a distant land called Iran — it was a mystery that had everyone scratching their heads!

Three gleaming statues appeared in the court, each one sparkling under the sun. They looked identical, dressed in shimmering robes with painted smiles that seemed to dance in the light. But hidden underneath their shiny exteriors were secrets that could turn the world upside down! One statue was made of solid GOLD, another of SILVER, and the last of LEAD! The challenge was to discover which was which without breaking them or leaving a scratch!

The clever courtiers jumped into action, weighing and tapping the statues for two whole days, but they were stumped! The crafty artisans had hollowed out the insides, so all the statues felt the same. Frustration hung in the air like a gloomy cloud as the deadline approached.

Just when hope seemed lost, the witty Birbal stepped forward. With a glimmer in his eyes, he walked around the statues, deep in thought. Then, he spotted something tiny — each statue had a nearly invisible hole in its left ear! His face lit up with excitement. “Bring me a jug of water!” he exclaimed.

The courtiers hurriedly fetched it, their hearts beating fast with curiosity. Birbal poured water into the first statue's ear, and it dripped out of its mouth! “This is the LEAD statue!” he announced, grinning widely. Next, he poured water into the second statue, and it flowed right through to the other ear. “This one is SILVER,” he declared. “It lets information slip away like whispers!”

Finally, he turned to the last statue, pouring in the water and waiting. Not a drop escaped! The court gasped! “This must be GOLD!” Birbal shouted, turning it upside down without a single drop falling. The King of Iran’s ambassador nodded in astonishment, bowing so deeply that his turban nearly touched the floor!

Emperor Akbar beamed with pride, knowing the wisest mind in all of Asia was right there beside him. And so, the court learned that true wisdom comes from listening closely and cherishing what really matters, a lesson that would be told for years to come.
