The Happy Prince

Moral Stories

A heartwarming moral story with a lesson that stays with you forever.

High above a lively city, on a tall stone column, stood a grand statue of a prince. His golden body shimmered as the sun danced on it, and his sparkling blue sapphire eyes twinkled like stars. A bright red ruby glittered on the hilt of his sword, making him the most wonderful sight in all the land. But from his lofty perch, the prince felt a deep ache in his heart.

He could see everything below—a poor seamstress stitching by the flickering light of a candle, shivering in the cold while her little child cried with a fever. Nearby, a hungry writer stared at a blank page, and on the frigid street stood a trembling little match girl, clutching her matches tightly, too frightened to go home without selling any. Just then, a tiny swallow flew down, exhausted from his long journey. “Why do you look so sad, kind prince?” the swallow chirped.

“I see so many in need,” the prince said, his voice soft but heavy. “Please take the ruby from my sword to the seamstress. She needs it more than I do.” The swallow nodded, gently taking the ruby and flying away. The seamstress gasped with joy when she received it.

“Now, dear swallow, take one of my sapphire eyes to the young writer,” said the prince. The swallow hesitated, worry filling his tiny heart. “But then you'll be blind!” he exclaimed. “Go,” the prince insisted gently. The swallow took the sapphire and soared into the night. When he returned, the prince asked, “Now, give my other sapphire to the little match girl.” With a heavy heart, the swallow obeyed.

Now blind yet smiling, the prince said, “Bring me news of others in need.” Piece by piece, the swallow began to strip the golden leaves from the statue, giving them to those who needed them most. With every gift, the prince felt lighter and brighter, filling his heart with joy.

As winter approached, the air turned icy, and the swallow grew weaker. One frosty evening, he fell at the prince’s feet, unable to fly any longer. The prince’s heart cracked open, a single tear rolling down his cheek. When the city council saw the bare statue, they decided to melt it down! But no matter how hot the flames burned, the prince’s heart remained intact, shining bright and true.

In that moment, an angel appeared, ready to collect the most precious treasures of the city. The angel took the cracked lead heart and the tiny bird, whispering, “These shall be cherished forever.” And so, in a world filled with magic, the prince’s brave gift of love became a story told for generations, reminding everyone that true happiness springs from giving and caring for one another.
