The Price of a Single Drop of Water

Vikram & Betaal Tales

A spine-tingling Vikram and Betaal riddle — where a brave king must answer or lose everything!

In a kingdom far away, the land of Marukhand baked under the scorching sun, which shone like a fiery dragon. For three long years, the clouds forgot how to rain, and the fields turned as dry as old biscuits. Wells cracked like broken dreams, and rivers became nothing but shimmering trails of sand that whispered secrets of the water that once flowed freely.

One day, the wise king, who cared deeply for his people, sent his bravest soldiers to neighboring lands to bring back water. "Fetch it at any cost!" he declared. Each week, a wagon rolled into town, bringing a little water to keep his people from wilting like flowers in the blazing heat. But one fateful day, a loud CRASH echoed through the streets—the bandits had attacked the wagon, stealing half the precious water! The king's heart sank as he gazed at the meager supply, knowing he had to make a terrible choice.

Three ministers stepped forward, each with a different idea. The first, a stout man, boomed, "Let’s give the water to the elderly! They have suffered the longest!" The second, a skinny fellow, nervously suggested, "No, we must give it to the children! They are our future!" The third, a wise-looking woman, declared, "We should give it to the workers! Without them, our kingdom cannot survive!" The court buzzed with heated arguments, but suddenly, a timid maid with kind eyes raised her hand.

"Your Majesty," she said softly, "let us share the water equally! Half for everyone is still survival. If we all suffer together, we can rise together!" The king paused, pondering her words. Just then, a mysterious voice echoed through the room. It was Betaal, the ghost perched on Vikram's shoulder! "A kingdom torn apart by unfairness will crumble! Is the maid’s wisdom the greatest of all?"

Vikram stood tall, confidently replying, "Yes! Her idea brings unity!"

With a smile, the king agreed, and the water was shared among everyone, filling every cup and jar. As the people drank, their hearts filled with joy and love, knowing they were united in their struggles and triumphs. The kingdom of Marukhand blossomed anew, proving that during the toughest times, kindness and togetherness could create the strongest bonds.

Up above, the ghost of Betaal laughed joyfully, soaring into the stormy sky, leaving behind a kingdom brighter than ever.
