The Potter and His Truth

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

In a lively village where rivers sparkled like diamonds and sunsets painted the sky in vibrant hues, lived a cheerful potter named Yudhisthira. He crafted pots so beautiful, they seemed to twinkle with stories. Though he didn’t have much, his heart shone brighter than the sun, filled with kindness and honesty.

One stormy night, after celebrating a friend’s birthday with delicious fruit juice, Yudhisthira stumbled in his workshop. The wind howled like a wild beast, and suddenly, CRASH! He tripped over his own pots, and a sharp piece of clay left a scar on his forehead, like a badge of clumsiness. Unfortunately, he had no money for a doctor, so the scar remained, a reminder of that silly night.

Then came a dreadful famine, leaving the village quiet and hungry. Desperate for work, Yudhisthira traveled to a faraway kingdom filled with golden treasures and laughter. He became a humble servant, working hard each day. One sunny afternoon, the king wandered through the courtyard and noticed Yudhisthira’s scar. “What a brave warrior you must be!” he declared, his eyes sparkling with admiration. The king had Yudhisthira promoted to an honored warrior, leaving everyone in the courtyard wide-eyed.

As war loomed over the kingdom, the king called upon Yudhisthira to share tales of his bravery. With his heart pounding like a drum, he stood before the king and said, “Your Majesty, I am just a potter. This scar is from a night of too much fruit juice and a clumsy fall.” Gasps echoed through the hall, and the king's smile faded.

“Remove him from the army,” he commanded, his voice heavy. Yudhisthira, heart sinking like a stone, pleaded, “Please, let me show my courage!” But the king shook his head gently, knowing that truth would always follow. With a heavy heart, Yudhisthira left, wiser now, understanding that being true to oneself is the greatest strength of all.
