The Pot of Wisdom

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In a magical kingdom where elephants twirled and birds painted the sky with their songs, there lived a wise king named Akbar. One bright day, as sunlight danced through the grand court's marble windows, a peculiar messenger from the faraway island of Sri Lanka strutted in. He held a shimmering scroll and announced, “The King of Sri Lanka demands a pot filled to the brim with INTELLIGENCE to be sent immediately!”

The courtiers gasped in confusion. “A pot of what?” one exclaimed. “How can we fill a pot with something invisible?” wondered another. Just when the room buzzed with bewilderment, a clever man named Birbal stepped forward, a twinkle in his eye. “I can create this pot of intelligence! Just give me a few weeks,” he said confidently.

The messenger, although puzzled, agreed. Birbal gathered twelve clay pots, each with a tiny opening, and ventured into a lush pumpkin field. With a sprinkle of magic, he planted delicate pumpkin flowers in each pot, leaving them cozy on their vines. “Water them well, but DO NOT touch the pots!” he instructed the gardener.

Days turned into weeks, and the pumpkins grew belly-full and round, squeezing tightly against the pot walls. At last, the day had come! Birbal entered the court, a grand cloth covering one of the pots. “Behold the pot of intelligence!” he declared. “But it’s sealed! You must remove it without breaking either the pot or the pumpkin!”

The messenger stepped forward, eyes wide and heart racing. Peering inside, he saw a giant pumpkin wedged snugly, impossible to remove! His face turned pale as he looked from the pumpkin to Birbal and then to King Akbar, who was trying hard not to laugh. Overwhelmed, the messenger bowed deeply, turned, and quietly left the court, his head hanging low.

The court erupted with laughter, filling the marble halls like sweet music. King Akbar chuckled, his belly shaking with delight. “Send him TEN more pots!” he exclaimed, and even the messenger outside couldn’t help but chuckle, realizing that sometimes, the cleverest answers come from the most unexpected challenges.
