The Peacock and the Crane

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

On a bright and sunny morning in a lively barnyard, a Peacock strutted proudly. He was truly a sight to see! His long, colorful tail shimmered in the sunlight like a magical fan bursting with every color of the rainbow—brilliant blues, dazzling greens, and sparkling golds. With each proud turn, he caught the eyes of all the animals, making sure they admired how magnificent he looked.

“Good morning!” chirped a graceful Crane as she landed on the wooden fence nearby. She was tall and elegant, but her feathers were a soft, simple gray. Standing next to the Peacock, she looked plain, as if a cloudy sky had come to visit a brilliant sunset.

“A very good morning indeed!” the Peacock puffed up his chest. “Especially for anyone lucky enough to gaze upon me! Have you seen my splendid tail?”

“It is very beautiful,” the Crane said kindly. “But my feathers help me fly high.”

The Peacock laughed, his voice ringing through the barnyard. “Who needs to fly when everyone can admire my colors?”

With a twinkle in her eye, the Crane flapped her powerful wings and soared into the sky! Up, up, up she went—higher than the barn, past the wooden fence, and into the fluffy clouds. The Peacock watched in awe, his heart racing. He had never seen anyone fly that high!

But when he tried to flap his stunning feathers, they felt heavy as stones, keeping him firmly on the ground. The Crane landed softly back on the fence, a gentle smile on her beak. The Peacock looked at her, his heart filled with respect.

In that moment, he realized something important: while he was beautiful and admired, it was the Crane’s strength that had taken her on a journey beyond the clouds. As the sun dipped low, painting the barnyard in shades of gold and purple, the Peacock smiled at the Crane, understanding that true beauty lies in what one can do, not just how one looks.
