Momotaro, The Peach Boy

Japanese Folktales

A beautiful Japanese folktale of honour, kindness, and wonder — retold for young hearts.

Once upon a time, by a river that glittered like a treasure chest filled with stars, there lived a gentle old woman. Each morning, she danced along the riverbank, washing clothes and humming sweet melodies. One day, a gigantic peach came swirling down the river, glowing with a rosy light! It bobbed and twirled, almost as if it were alive! With a heart full of joy, the old woman pulled the peach from the water and hurried home. Her husband took a knife and, with a loud CRACK, the peach opened to reveal a delightful baby boy, his cheeks as rosy as blooming cherry blossoms. They named him Momotaro, the Peach Boy.

Momotaro grew stronger each day, training like a fierce warrior. He lifted heavy boulders and practiced mighty kicks, but his heart longed for adventure. Tales of an island filled with frightening Oni demons reached his ears. They stole treasures and roared like thunder! Momotaro decided he must confront them. His grandmother packed him scrumptious millet dumplings, each one sprinkled with love and magic. With courage dancing in his heart, he set off.

As he traveled down the twisting path, a spotted dog came bounding up, wagging its tail. “Give me a dumpling, and I’ll help you!” it barked. Momotaro grinned and tossed a dumpling, and the dog happily joined him. Soon a cheeky monkey swung from a tree, shouting, “I want to fight too!” Three dumplings later, a proud pheasant landed beside them. Momotaro now had a brave team!

They sailed across the wild waves, their little boat riding the giant swells. But as they approached the Island of Thunder, dark clouds gathered menacingly. At the shore, they faced towering iron gates! The clever pheasant swooped up and unlocked them with a quick CLANK of its beak. Together, they charged in, ready for battle! The pheasant dove at the demons, the monkey hurled stones, and the dog nipped at their ankles. Finally, Momotaro confronted the gigantic Demon King, their fight shaking the ground with each powerful blow! With one mighty throw, Momotaro sent the Demon King crashing down with a THUD! “We surrender!” the demons cried, their voices trembling.

Momotaro returned home with carts overflowing with gold, silver, and sparkling jewels. But the greatest treasure was the peace he brought to his village. He shared everything he had, filling hearts with joy and laughter. That afternoon, cherry trees bloomed everywhere, filling the air with sweet fragrances. The brave Peach Boy had turned darkness into light, showing everyone the strength of friendship and kindness.
