In a grand palace filled with laughter and lush gardens, Emperor Akbar cherished his magical green parrot, who sparkled with vibrant feathers and a knack for chatting with everyone. The clever little bird could answer questions, recite poems, and greet visitors with a cheerful squawk that echoed like music! So, the Emperor declared, “Whoever brings me news of my parrot’s death shall face a terrible fate!” At first, this made everyone super careful, but no one realized the trouble it could cause if the parrot... simply stopped breathing.
One sunny morning, Ali, the parrot’s devoted caretaker, tiptoed to the cage, humming a happy tune. But when he peeked inside, his heart plummeted. The parrot lay still, its beautiful feathers dim and lifeless. “Oh no!” Ali gasped, shaking with fear. He knew he was in big trouble either way—if he told the Emperor, he would be punished, but if he stayed silent, the Emperor would discover the truth!
Just then, a bright idea sparked in his mind! He dashed to find his clever friend, Birbal. “Birbal Saheb!” he cried, breathless and scared. “I need your help! The parrot... it’s not moving!” Birbal stroked his beard, thinking hard. “Don’t worry, I’ll handle it.”
Entering the royal court with a bounce in his step, Birbal approached the Emperor, who sat on his throne, shining like a star. “Your Majesty,” he said, “your extraordinary parrot was in a most remarkable state today!” Akbar leaned closer, eyes wide. “Really? Tell me!”
Birbal continued, “He lay still, facing the sky, his eyes closed. He wasn’t eating, drinking, or moving… not even ruffling a feather!” The room fell silent, and Akbar's smile faded. “Birbal... is the parrot dead?”
With a gentle smile, Birbal raised his hands. “I didn’t say that, Your Majesty. Those words were all yours.” Slowly, a smile returned to Akbar's face as he understood. It wasn’t fair to punish someone for news they couldn’t control.
“Call for Ali,” he said softly. “He is forgiven, and my decree is canceled!” Laughter filled the palace, and soon the joyful chatter of the parrot rang out once more, reminding everyone that kindness and understanding could lift even the heaviest of hearts.
